Day 5 - A Rainy Day with Iconic Views

21st October 2024

FAROE ISLANDS PHOTO TOUR

After an intense weekend on Suðuroy, we started Day 5 with a slower pace to recharge. Rain was in the morning forecast, and indeed, we woke up to the sound of raindrops tapping on the windows. Breakfast and coffee at 9 AM gave us the chance to relax, chat, and plan the day ahead.

Despite the wet weather, we were eager to explore. Armed with our gear and high hopes, we headed out to visit some of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic spots.

A Beach Stop in Syðrugøta

Our first destination was the beach at Syðrugøta, a charming and peaceful location. The gray skies and steady waves created the perfect conditions for long exposure photography, allowing us to capture the movement of the water in a serene, dreamlike way.

We eagerly explored Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography, a creative technique involving deliberate motion to capture stunning, artistic shots. The Faroe Islands’ dramatic seascapes and shifting light proved to be an excellent setting for experimenting with this style. While some results were truly striking, the experience inspired us to continue refining this approach. Given how well the Faroe Islands landscape suits ICM photography, we’re excited to possibly include this technique in our 2025 Faroe Islands Landscape Photography Tour, offering participants the chance to explore new creative possibilities.

Fossá Waterfall: A Bucket List Destination

Next, we drove to the Fossá Waterfall, one of the tallest and most iconic waterfalls in the Faroe Islands. This spot was high on Richard’s bucket list, and it’s easy to see why. The rain greeted us upon arrival, forcing us to wait in the car for 15 minutes. When the downpour showed no sign of stopping, we decided to drive on to another location and return to Fossá later.

Tjørnuvík: Iconic Backdrops

Our detour led us to the picturesque village of Tjørnuvík, framed by the legendary sea stacks Risin and Kellingin (The Giant and the Witch). This storybook village is nestled against a dramatic coastline, making it a favorite spot for photographers.

Unfortunately, the tide was high, limiting our options on the beach. Without the expansive foreground we were hoping for, we decided to head back to Fossá and revisit Tjørnuvík later in the day.

Exploring Fossá Waterfall

By the time we returned to Fossá Waterfall, the rain had stopped, leaving us with the misty, moody atmosphere that makes the Faroe Islands so magical.

As the tallest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, Fossá cascades down in two stunning plateaus, making it a must-visit for photographers. We started at the lower level, capturing wide-angle shots of the powerful falls framed by rugged, rocky terrain. After about an hour, we ventured up to the upper level, a more secluded spot where you can walk behind the waterfall. This unique vantage point offered dramatic new compositions and an unforgettable up-close experience with the raw force of the water.

For over two hours, we had this incredible location entirely to ourselves, a rare luxury that made the session even more special. Fossá is not only a natural wonder but also a perfect playground for photographers seeking to capture the essence of the Faroese landscape.

Tjørnuvík Revisited

On our way back, we made a second stop at Tjørnuvík, where the receding tide had revealed much more of the beach. With more space to work with, we focused on capturing leading lines and dramatic skies, using the Giant and the Witch sea stacks as the perfect backdrop.

While we hoped for sunset colors to complete the scene, the sky remained subdued. Nevertheless, the location offered plenty of opportunities for stunning shots that showcased the magic of this iconic village.

Wrapping Up the Day

The day ended quietly back at home. After supper, we spent the evening importing and editing our photos, reflecting on the day’s successes despite the challenges of the weather.

Rain or shine, the Faroe Islands continued to offer unforgettable experiences and photographic treasures. Stay tuned as we share more of our journey in preparation for the 2025 Faroe Islands Landscape Photography Tour!
